The McLaren 720S has added a new title to its impressive and growing list of awards. After previously being named as Road & Track’s 2018 Performance Car of the Year, an AUTOMOBILE All Star, Car and Driver Magazine Editor’s choice, Performance Car of the Year 2018 by the Automotive Video Association and earning a spot on Robb Report’s Best of Best list for 2018, the 720S has now been named “World Performance Car” by the World Car Awards.
The Award was presented recently at the New York International Auto Show. This award is particularly noteworthy in that it is global in nature, with 80 prestigious worldwide judges serving as jurors. There were 15 judges from North America, including those representing Automotive News, Fortune Magazine, Kelley Blue Book and CNET. Judges represent automotive-related media outlets from around the world.
The 720S faced an intense line-up that included the Aston Martin Vantage and the Mercedes AMG 4-door Coupe. To be eligible for the award, vehicles must be produced in volumes of at least 2,000 per year, and must be on sale on at least two continents. The 720S was first introduced at the 2017 Geneva International Car Show. Since then, it has been extensively praised for its performance, crafted luxury and unparalleled driver involvement.
The 720S impresses with a powerful 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. Drivers can be propelled from a standstill to 124 mph in a blistering 7.8 seconds. Get from zero to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. This McLaren has a top speed of 210 mph. Like a world-class wine, this is a supercar designed to savor with each experience.
The McLaren 720 has a stunning mid-engine design, bold intakes, a slightly higher rear stance, and iconic dihedral doors, all which help earn its thoroughbred McLaren pedigree. Carbon fiber Monocell II construction provides a rigid and lightweight cabin that has been proven safe to racing standards. The racing-inspired interior is cozy yet offers surprising head and shoulder room. Driver and passenger are nestled in racing seats, with easy access to an infotainment optionsthat are digitally available on a center console. The gauge cluster provides a wealth of important data on a bright, easy-to-read screen.
